Vicky Leighton, Lincs, writes: ''My husband and I are sailing from Southampton to Auckland next January on the Queen Elizabeth and spending two weeks in New Zealand before flying back to Britain. We don't want to lug around the formal and winter clothing we need on board. Cunard no longer allows passengers to leave excess luggage and pick it up when the ship docks in Southampton. It will fly the bag back at £481.92 for up to 34 kilograms. Is there a cheaper alternative?''
Gill Charlton replies: ''The cheapest way I found was through First Luggage (0800 083 5503; www.firstluggage.com), which offers a door-to-door service. It will collect a suitcase weighing up to 30kg from any hotel in New Zealand and deliver it to your home for £289. Cunard's charge is higher because there are extra port costs involved in collecting the bag from the ship itself. First Luggage offers this baggage service worldwide. It costs £85 to any destination in Europe and £120 to anywhere in the United States.'' '

- FIRST LUGGAGE - VOLCANIC ASH UPDATE FOR TRAVELLERS AND THEIR LUGGAGE
Pack light? I needed every one of those thirty bags... How Joan Collins travels in style:
'At this time of year, when - volcanoes aside - most of us start to think about holidays, phrases such as 'Pack light!' and 'Capsule wardrobe!' strike fear into the heart of a dedicated shopper like me.
Ever since I started dividing my time between London and the U.S., I've been compelled to travel like a packhorse, toting dozens of suitcases containing prodigious amounts of clothes, accessories, books, CDs, DVDs and the odd household chattel from one residence to another. I realise this will garner little pity, but there it is.
And I'm not the only well-known woman who can't resist taking half her possessions when she travels - Madonna recently travelled through Heathrow with a heap of luggage piled up on a sagging trolley.
People think I'm mad to go through this rigmarole a couple of times a year but, far from being a chore, I enjoy it - and I'm lucky to have three secret weapons to help me.
Number one is the company First Luggage, which picks up the cases from my home, hotel or wherever I am and magically whisks them to the next port of call.'

'Jackie Marsden, Yorkshire, writes:
"We are cruising from Southampton to San Francisco, travelling overland across the United States and flying back from New York. My problem is what to pack because we will need warm clothes, summer clothes and formal clothes for more than a month. We don't really want to lug heavy cases across the US, nor to have to pay the airline's excess-luggage charges."
Gill Charlton replies:
"If you travel a lot, you might consider taking one of the new generation of lightweight suitcases with wheels, packing light, and using laundry services. But it sounds as though you like to dress up a bit.
The solution is to use a luggage delivery service to repatriate your cruise suitcase when you disembark in San Francisco. There are ... specialist companies. First Luggage (0800 083 5503; firstluggage.com) can transport a 30kg suitcase from San Francisco to your home using its door-to-door service." '

'It was a case of The Nightmare Before Christmas at various airports last year when hundreds of travellers were left without their luggage during the holiday season ... but a new company aims to combat any baggage fears. First Luggage sends baggage ahead in a hassle-free, door-to-door delivery service, which ensures that all items are delivered prior to your arrival ... allowing you to keep your hands free for any last-minute stocking-fillers in Duty Free. With heightened security - particularly during peak periods - queues can reach an unprecedented level, and the extra weight of traffic means that there is a greater risk of baggage being lost or mislaid. First Luggage, on the other hand, puts an end to the fear of baggage going astray by scanning luggage up to 20 times en route. There is even the option for customers to monitor the progress of their luggage online. First Luggage can’t promise your items will be delivered on a sleigh by nice old man wearing a red suit, but it can promise the gift of peace of mind this holiday season.'

For the luggage obsessive, you can log on to their website and follow the path of your two-wheeled trolley case in real time.'

Thus, a travel trend has emerged to solve this problem: luggage shipping [with] companies such as First Luggage ... It costs about £80 to send a 30-kilo case door-to-door from London to Val d’Isere, for example - only a few pounds more than what some airlines will soon be charging - and without the peace of mind that comes with First Luggage’s money-back guarantee.'
